Preparing for a showstopping first dance can be time-consuming and difficult, but it's definitely worth it. According to Joseph Swallow, of Orange County Wedding Dance, couples with no dance experience should expect to take at least five to ten private lessons to master the basics of partner dancing. But the work's still not over. Here are Joseph's tips to ensure first-dance superstardom.

START EARLY
"Couples should aim to start taking lessons two to three months before their wedding day," says Joseph. "While it's possible to learn a routine just a week or two before, you and your groom will be much more relaxed if you start early." And don't be concerned about forgetting your routine by taking lessons too early. "Dancing involves muscle memmory," he says. "You won't forget the steps as long as you keep practicing."

PROVIDE DETAILS
"I always ask my couples a ton of questions because certain things may limit what types of dances can be perfromed," says Joseph. For example, be prepared to tell your instructor about your dress style, hair accessories, heel height, dance-floor dimensions, reception seating arrangements, and the type of musicians you've hired--all need to be factored in when choreographing your dance.

KNOW YOUR LIMITS
"Often couples will come in wanting to perform a dance routine they've seen in a movie or on YouTube," says Joseph. "If a couple has decided to perform a complicated routine, we can definitely help them pull it off--they just need to be prepared to put in the practice." According to Joseph, a complex dance routine may require 20 lessons or more.
