Eric had a dilemma. The song he had selected for the special dance with his Mother for his Wedding Reception, "You Are My Sunshine," had sentimental value, but the lyrics themselves contained a story about a man whose true love had left him for another. It would be awkward to have lyrics like that playing during their special dance, but this song was important to Eric. At just three years old, his mother taught him how to sing the chorus to the song. To this day, they both share fond memories of singing the song together. Eric gave me a tape cassette of him singing the song from when he was a young boy. Eric suggested that I could play this recording before playing the professional version so that his guests would understand the connection it held for the two of them. I knew that this was going to be a memorable moment, but I really wanted to find a way to make their moment more than memorable. There had to be a way to make it magical. After doing some research, I found a version of the song performed by Bing Crosby that was in the same key as Eric's three year old voice on the tape. With a little help from modern technology, I made a new version of the song that only featured the chorus lyrics; it no longer had any references to the story of unrequited love. I was also able to insert Eric's singing into the musical bridge, thus creating the effect that he was actually singing along with Bing Crosby. At the Reception, when it was time, I invited Eric and his mother to come out to the dance floor for their mother/son dance. Before starting the song, I pointed out to his mother that even though her son was a grown man now, she will probably never forget how cute he was when he was just three years old and how he used to sing her this song. When Bing Crosby began to sing, "You Are My Sunshine," it was apparent that Eric's mother was surprised to say the least. Her eyes began to well up, as did Eric's. They both looked even more surprised and touched as Eric's little voice could be heard clearly singing along, and, before you knew it, there wasn't a dry eye in the room.
